Hello everyone, our third event is here!

The theme of this event is called "Conflict between Traditional and Modern Taiwanese Culture", and we will be playing two movies by Taiwanese
director Wang Yu-Lin, namely "Seven Days in Heaven" and ⋯⋯"Flying Dragon, Dancing Phoenix"!

Seven Days in Heaven's original author is Essay Liu, and this literary piece is the winning prose of the “Lin Rung San Literary Award”, which is
currently the literary award with the highest cash prize in Taiwan. Essay Liu then directed the film with Director Wang Yu-Lin, and the film tells the
story of a woman returning to a farming village in Changhua, central Taiwan within seven days of her father’s death. Upon her return, she has to face
the complicated Taiwanese funeral ritual traditions, and the film depicts this in a way of "black humour".

Famous Taiwanese traditional opera actress Kuo Chun-Mei takes the lead in "Flying Dragon, Dancing Phoenix". After receiving a Lifetime
Achievement Award, the old patriarch of the opera troupe passes away, and then his daughter, the successor and star of the show, injures her leg. The
survival of the troupe now falls onto the son-in-law, who recruited a man to be the female star playing the male lead. This hilarious and heart-warming
story brims with laughs and tears, and offers a unique look at the onstage and offstage lives of Taiwanese folk opera performances, including a
delightful twist on the traditional practice of switching gender roles.

We have also invited Director Wang and Ms Kuo Chun-Mei to NTU to give us a talk, and the theme of the talk is "Looking at Taiwanese Opera and the
Local Folk Culture through Film". Do support the event by coming for the talk, and you would get to know more about Taiwanese traditional opera,
film experiences and the how does traditional and popular culture blend into each other.

We hope to see you soon!
